Ever hear of tying the knot or shotgun wedding?
While we’re talking about unique wedding sayings, like tying the knot or shotgun weddings, there are plenty of other phrases that have been used to describe the union of two people and their journey down the aisle. Of course, “tying the knot” comes from the days when marriages were arranged by families and not by lovebirds themselves. And it symbolized the agreement between two families to bind their children together in marriage.
It is also believed that the husband would tie a rope or ribbon around the bride’s wrist to symbolize their union.
The same goes for “Getting Hitched.” It’s a fun way of saying that the bride and groom and connected. And connection is what a marriage is all about right?
That’s when the bride to be is pregnant and in the old days her father would pull out his shotgun and force the young fella to marry his girl so that they wouldn’t bring shame to the family and to ensure that the father to be was responsible for the child. Today, we live in a much more civilized society and no one has to resort to violence to force a couple into marriage.
And let’s not forget the phrase made famous by singer, song writer Beyonce, “shoulda put a ring on it!” This phrase is often used by women who have been left at the alter or after a long-term relationship. It’s a humorous way of saying that you should have made an effort to make your relationship official, as in “I shouldn’t have let him slip through my fingers.”
No matter how you do it, make sure you plan your wedding to fit you unique style and personalities. It shouldn’t be about what is trendy or the latest fashion. You should wear what makes you feel beautiful, confident and comfortable. And remember to have fun!
It’s your big day, it should be fun and memorable!
And hey, let us know how it turned out! Did you tie the knot, get hitched, did you put a ring on it?
